They obviously don't have to worry about that for things like Dota 2 LAN tournaments since everyone just signs in with their accounts and they only have to worry about 10 PC's playing offline at once. So at best, you will get a LAN option but it will still need to the internet to do "checks" between everyones data. They have to be sure the game checks back to their Steam servers somehow so you can stop people from fucking with the game and others somehow. The reason we don't have it now is Valve can keep track of the stuff they have now in terms of file-checking to prevent things like cheating and duping of items. Which would still require the internet to do online checks. You won't be able to play with others unless you setup something like a LAN option. No cosmetics for offline mode or any of the possible unlocks or drops. If you're going to have an offline mode then it means it would HAVE to be cut off from the internet completely. Which would possibly cause a number of issues. The issue is giving players all the data. To summarize, this isn't a matter of them allowing their game to be stolen, it's just a matter of appealing to what I can only imagine is a niche community that probably isn't high on their priority list. But, if the Dedicated Server works roughly the same as it did with Source 1 then you'd be able to host it as soon as, say, Left 4 Dead 3 comes out (which will feature a Source 2 Dedicated Server, pretty much guaranteed).Įither way, you can do it on Source 1 just fine, if people wanted to literally rip Dota 2 out and turn it into Defense of the Anime 2 then they're free to do so. I'm not entirely sure on the specifics of Source 2 Dedicated Server, I don't think it's possible right now. You can start local lobbies at will, and using the Alien Swarm Source Dedicated Server you can start a server which people can easily join (I think with the right settings they can also join local lobbies, but I've never really tried, if you can you should be able to do it on Source 2 right now too using those same settings). TLDR : An offline Lan mode would be awesome. Technically it will grow even larger if dota2 gets an offline lan mode. But again sm1 will figure out to overide this too.īut it will also have a lot of merits aswell and like war3 dota it might help with spreading the game to more local mass of the 3rd world country with internet issues. But something like a kill-switch to force the game from running if it does not check with the server after a period of XX days.
